1992 Topps #953 Justin Thompson Draft Pick

Justin Thompson played in the Major Leagues from 1996 to 1999, and once more in the 2005 season. He was selected in the first round of the 1991 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers, and got called up by Detroit in 1996. He stayed with them through the end of the 1999 season, and was traded to the Texas Rangers with Gabe Kapler and Frank Catalanotto for Juan Gonzalez. He suffered a torn rotator cuff, and missed the '00 and '01 seasons, but returned to the Majors in 2005 with the Rangers. 

Justin Thompson's card resume is kind of funny. He didn't get into the 1992 Topps set (although he should have as a #1 Draft Pick), and he has a few cards made in seasons which he didn't play at all. Let's take a look.

Justin got his first Topps card in the 1994 set, in the Future Stars subset. His next Topps card was in the 1997 set. He got into the 1998 set, the 1999 set, and the 2000 set, which featured him pictured as a Ranger. Interestingly, like the 1994 set, when he got a card and didn't play in a game for the season before or during the year of the set, Justin got a 2001 Topps card. This would be Justin's final Topps card. 

Thompson is missing cards from the 1992, 1996 Traded, 2000 (picturing him as a Tiger), 2005 Update, and 2006 Topps sets. My '92 Topps card gets his rookie card finished, and leave Justin with only 4 cards needed to finish his career Topps run.

I am currently working on finishing the 1992 Topps Traded set (fronts and backs), and I will add those to the complete set page, and if I ever get this blog finished and run through the main set, I will start with the Traded set.

1992 Topps #932 Kevin Ritz

Kevin Ritz played in the Majors from 1989 through 1992, and 1994 through 1998. He played for the Detroit Tigers during the first peroid, didn't play anywhere in 1993 (perhaps he was injured), and then played for the Colorado Rockies during his second period in the Majors.
He got his first Topps card in the 1990 set, missed the 1991 and 1992 set, got in the '93 set as a Rockie, was in the 1995 Topps Traded set, and got in the 1997 Topps set. He is missing cards from the 1991, 1996, 1998, and 1999 Topps sets. Technically, he is also missing a 1993 Topps card showing him as a Tiger, so I made him one. I also got his 1998 Topps done.

I have got a ton of cards in the '98 set done lately, and now am about 250 cards away from finishing the set. I might just finish it before the end of the year. Thanks for checking out my latest post.

1992 Topps #903 Shawn Hare

Shawn Hare played for 4 seasons in the Majors. He debuted in 1991 with the Detroit Tigers, and played with them in 1992. He spent 1993 in the minors, and played 1994 with the Mets. His sunset season came in 1995 with the Rangers.

Shawn got his first and only Topps card in 1993. He appeared in the 1992 Stadium Club set, and got a 1992 Topps Debut card as well. Shawn is missing cards from the 1995 and 1996 Topps sets.

I did a lot of work on the checklists to a few sets, and think I have finally got every card into the 1989-1993 Topps sets. I did a bunch of research trying to find team photos for those sets, and added cards for the stadiums in those sets. I will probably add those cards to the '94-'01 sets as well. It will take a while, but hopefully in the next year or 2, every Topps set from '89-'01 will have a list of cards needed to complete it, and I will continue to update them when anyone makes a card from the set. 1992 Topps #890 Tony Bernazard

Tony Bernazard played in the Major Leagues from 1979-1991. He came up in 1979 with the Expos, and played with them in 1980. He was with the White Sox from 1981 through the middle of 1983, when he was acquired by the Mariners. He spent 1984 through the middle of 1987 with the Indians, and then was acquired by the A's. He played in Japan from 1988-1990, then came back in 1991 for 6 games with the Tigers.

Tony first appeared in a Topps set in 1980, when he appeared on a 3-player rookie card with Randy Miller and John Tamargo. He got into both the 1981 regular and Traded sets. He got a regular 1982 card, and a regular and Traded 1983 card. He was in both the regular and Traded sets again in 1984, and then got into the regular Topps set in 1985 and 1986. For 1987, Tony got a regular issue, and an All-Star cad, as he put up his best numbers in 1986. He get his last Topps card in 1988. This 1992 Topps custom finished Tony's career Topps run, although he could probably be given a card in the 1991 Traded set.

I am currently working on templates for the 1994 Topps set, and if all goes well, I may have those, as well as the 1998 templates done by late tomorrow. I have a feeling that I will have pages up for the 1989-2001 sets up any day now on my other blog. Thanks for checking out my latest post.

1992 Topps Mike Dalton

Mike only got into 1 season in the Majors, 1991, pitching 4 games for the Tigers. I own 1 of the 3 cards from Major sets that he appeared on in 1992 ('92 Fleer). He also got a '92 Topps Debut card and a 1992 Score 100 Rising Stars card.

He was understandable left off of the 1992 Topps set since he only played in 4 games in 1991. I was surprised that Score didn't include him in their regular set, but Fleer did. Dalton put up some good numbers in the Minors so it's surprising that he didn't see at least a little more time in the Bigs or make it up in 1990 with the Red Sox.

This card was pretty easy to make. I had to steal the picture from his '92 Score 100 Rising Stars cards, since he didn't have any non-card photos in a Tigers uniform.

1992 Topps Tarrik Brock Draft Pick

Today's card marks the first draft pick card in my custom 1992 Topps set. The Detroit Tigers had a draft pick card of Trevor Miller, but missed out on draft pick cards of top prospects Justin Thompson and Brock. I added Thompson and Brock in my set so the first 3 picks in the '91 Draft for the Tigers now have a card in the '92 set. 

Tarrik never made it to the Bigs with the Tigers, but did make it to AAA with them. I actually saw Brock play in the Minors in 1996 while I was living in Lakeland, Florida and he was playing in low-A ball with the Lakeland Tigers. I probably went to 5 games that year and got his autograph on a pennant, which is hanging up in my man-cave. After the '96 season, Tarrik was selected in the Rule-5 Draft by the Mariners. He stayed with them until 1999, when he signed with the Rockies before the season started. In July that year, he was traded to the Cubs, and then in 2000, he reached the Majors, playing in 13 games with them, getting 2 hits and stealing 1 base. He spent 2001 with Elmira in the Independant League, and spent 2002-2003 in the Dodgers system before retiring. After his playing career, he started coaching in 2006 with Ogden. Then from 2007 to 2013, he was the Marlins outfield and baserunning coordinator. He was their interim 1st Base Coach in 2010. In 2014, he was back in the Majors again, this time as the Astros 1st Base Coach. 2015 was spent as a Padres Minor League Coordinator, and this year, he is the Padres 1st Base Coach. 

Brock's only major-issue cards include a '92 Bowman, '92 Stadium Club Dome, 2000 Fleer Mistique and 2000 Fleer Tradition Update card. He also has a '92 Upper Deck Minor League card.

I consider Tarrik part of my Favorite player collection, but only have 1 of his cards, a 1991 Classic/Best Minor League card. One of these days, I'll try to print out this card and make it card #2 in my Brock collection. I will also probably make his 2001 Topps card, finishing up Tarrik's career Topps run (although I may try to add him to a few prospect cards in the '93-'97 sets).

1992 Topps Detroit Tiger team set

I decided to try to finish making the team set of my favorite team, the Detroit Tigers. I thought it would be pretty easy, but I was proven wrong by John Moses, and the coaches. I couldn't find a picture of John Moses in a Tiger unifor anywhere, and no baseball cards exist of him as a Tiger, so I had to paste a hat and a Tiger logo on a Seattle Mariners uniform of him. I was able to find pictures of all 6 of the Tiger coaches, but unfortunately, for 4 of them, the only ones I could find were really small, and the looked all grainy when I enlarged them. Problems aside, every person that appeared in a game for the Detroit Tigers in 1991 now has a 1992 Topps card.

1992 Topps Mike Munoz

Mike Munoz made it to the Big Leagues for the first time with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1989. He appeared in the 1989 Topps Debut set (card # 85). He pitched for the Dodgers in 1990, but didn't appear in the 1991 set, and pitched with the Detroit Tigers in 1991, but didn't appear in the 1992 set. Here is his missing 1992 Topps card.

1992 Topps Rusty Meacham

Rusty Meacham was one of my favorite players as a teenager in the '90's. I met him a few times at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida during Spring Training in 1996. He signed a few baseball cards for me, and was always kind enough to talk to the fans before games. I chose him to be the first player to be on a base card in the custom 1992 Topps set. Rusty would later appear in the 1992 Topps Debut set (card # 122), the 1992 Topps Traded set, as he joined the Royals in 1992 (card # T72), and in the 1993 Topps set the following year (card # 321), but nothing in the 1992 regular set, so now he does.
