1992 Topps #929 Daryl Irvine

Daryl Irvine pitched in the Majors from 1990 to 1992 with the Boston Red Sox, going 4-5 with a 5.68 ERA.

Daryl got a rookie card with the 1991 Topps set, and that was it for him. He is now just missing a 1993 Topps card to complete his career Topps run.

Sorry about such a quick post, but this week has been a little crazy, today is a little crazy, but I hope to perhaps get some time to do a post or two in the coming week. Thank you for taking the time to read my latest post.

1992 Topps Jeff Plympton

Jeff Plympton played 1 season in the Majors, making it up to the Boston Red Sox in 1991. I was only 8 in 1991, so I didn't follow baseball as closely as I do now, but I would assume that it was a big deal when he got called up, seeing as he was a hometown guy from Massachusetts.

Jeff didn't appear in the 1992 Topps set, but was in the 1992 Topps Debut and 1992 Stadium Club set. As far as non-Topps brands in 1992, he got in the Score and Upper Deck sets in 1992.

From the stats on the back of the card, it seems like Jeff could've been a serviceable reliever, if not closer, for the Red Sox, but after 1991 his ERA jumped, and he played his last season in the minors in 1993. I really wish the internet had become popular in the '80's. There are many players who I would love to know more info about but I just can't find much because they played in the early '90's or before. Nowadays, you can find out if a player called it quits because of an injury, but before the internet was popular, you couldn't. We will never know with Plympton, although I believe he is a good ttm signer, so he may respond to questions if asked.

Thanks for checking out my latest post.

1992 Topps Matt Young

Today's card is the first card that I "borrowed" from the 1992 O-Pee-Chee set. In 1992, the OPC set mirrored the 1992 Topps set except for the fact that the All-Star cards and a few select subsets were replaced with a Gary Carter tribute subset as well as a few cards of players who were left out of the '92 Topps set. Matt Young was one of those players. I chose to include the OPC cards because unlike players who got a card in the '92 Topps Traded set, the OPC guys didn't have a card with a Topps logo on it. I also did it with the 6 ToppsGold checklist replacement cards as well.

Matt Young had appeared in a few Topps sets over the years but was left off of the '92 set even though he appeared in 19 games. He would be left off of the 1993 set as well, even though he pitched a no hitter (allowing 2 runs and losing) in 1992. He accomplished just about all of the things you would hope to accomplish as an individual, appearing in the All-Star game, pitching the no-hitter, striking out 4 batters in an inning, and playing for a World Championship team. I was happy to add his autograph to my collection back when I was doing ttm signatures.

I basically just added the Topps logo to the front. On the back I made the background by the stats transparent enough that I could put the Topps logo behind it, added text where it was needed, put the Topps logo under the number and changed the number. Otherwise, it looks like the original OPC card. I think it looks like it belongs in the '92 Topps set though and wish Topps would've at least gave the OPC guys and ToppsGold checklist replacements a regular card. Thanks for checking out my latest card.

Errors and Omissions

I don't know how I stumbled upon it, but the other day, I came upon a picture of Nick Esasky's 1992 O-Pee-Chee card, and realized that I somehow didn't include him in my '92 Topps set. I decided to go 1 by 1 through the '92 OPC set and make sure I didn't skip anyone else. While doing so, I realized that I missed John Dopson as well. I also saw that Jim Schaefer had a '92 OPC card (I had used another photo to create his '92 card. I decided to leave the Shaefer card as is.
Then, while I was organizing my binders the other day, I realized that I had made Tony Castillo's '92 card as an Atlanta Brave when he really finished the '91 season as a New York Met, so I made a corrected version of that card.
I believe with these 3 corrections that the 1992 Topps set is now complete, and stands at 1366 cards.
Eventually I will get back to working on the backs of the cards, maybe once the craziness of the holidays subsides. Thanks for checking out my blog, and if you see any more cards I forgot or need to change let me know.

1992 Topps Kevin Romine

If Topps had made a Kevin Romine card in 1992, it would've been his last card. Kevin appears on Topps cards during a few seasons in his career (1987, 1990 Traded, and 1991), and missed out on getting cards in the 1986, 1988, 1989, and 1992 sets. I couldn't find any good photos to use for this card, so I actually borrowed this one from his 1990 Topps Traded card.
