1992 Topps #941 Rafael Ramirez

Rafael Ramirez played in the Major Leagues from 1980 to 1992. He was a good fielder, and made the NL All-Star team in 1984.
His got called up to the Majors in 1980 with the Atlanta Braves. He was with them through the end of the 1987 season, and spend the final 5 years of his career with the Houston Astros.
Rafael got his first Topps card in the 1981 Topps set on a combo rookie card with Tommy Harper and Ed Miller. He then got solo cards in the 1982-1991 Topps sets, as well as a 1988 Topps Traded card. That means that Ramirez is only missing cards in the 1992 and 1993 Topps sets. As it turns out, I have completed Rafael's career Topps run, since I have done this 1992 Topps custom and his 1993 Topps sunset card.

1992 Topps #938 Gary Cooper

Gary Cooper only played one year in the Majors, in 1991 for the Houston Astros. He got 4 Hits in 16 At-Bats, for a .250 Batting Average. He had 1 Double and 2 RBIs.
Gary appeared in a few major baseball card sets, including 1992 Donruss, 1992 Pinnacle (Idols), 1992 Score, and 1992 Topps Debut. Interestingly, he didn't appear on a base Pinnacle card, but got into the Idols subset.
This 1992 Topps custom covers Gary's missing Topps cards, unless you decide to get technical. If you give him a 1991 Topps Traded card, as well as a 1995 Topps Traded card (since he appeared as a replacement player for the Montreal Expos in '95 Spring Training), then he is still missing 2 cards. I will probably add the '95 Topps card at some point, and if I get a craving to work on some Topps Traded checklists, I will add Gary's card to the 1991 page.

1992 Topps #922 Chris Gardner

Chris Gardner played for one year in the Major Leagues in 1991 with the Houston Astros. He got into 5 games, putting up a 1-2 record with 12 Strikeouts and a 4.01 ERA.

Chris got into a few major card sets, including 1992 Bowman, 1992 Donruss (Rated Rookies), 1992 Leaf, 1992 Pinnacle (Rookie Prospects), and the 1992 Topps Debut set. He didn't get into the regular 1992 Topps set, and this '92 Topps custom completes his career Topps run.

I am almost done with a busy week, with work and 2 doctor appointments tomorrow, and I am hoping to get some time to work on customs later tomorrow night and a little before and after another doctor appointment on Friday. I also have a new toy to get figured out by Sunday, a nice Korg Tritan Studio keyboard, and I'm hoping to go through the effects and finding a few nice ones to use at church. I'm hoping there will be a nice one similar to a Fender Rhodes, a few electric pianos, some Hammond B3 organ effects, and maybe some synth effects or two. Needless to say, it's going to be a fun, but busy few days for me. Thanks for checking out my latest card.

1992 Topps #910 Dave Rohde

Dave Rohde played for 3 years in the Majors. He came up in 1990 with the Houston Astros, played with them in 1991, and spent one final year in the Bigs with the Cleveland Indians in 1992. 

Dave only had 1 Topps card, a 1991 Topps rookie. All he needs is a 1993 Topps sunset card to complete his career Topps run.

1992 Topps Tony Eusebio

Tony Eusebio got into 10 games with the Astros in 1991. He got 2 cards in Topps products in 1992, a '92 Stadium Club card, and a '92 Topps Debut card, but missed out on the regular set, probably because he appeared in so few games. The only other major 1992 set that Tony got into was the '92 Score set.

It was hard sometimes to get photos of the Astros with the old logo, since they switched to the futuristic star logo in 1994. For this photo, I borrowed one from his 1993 Team Stadium Club card. This card is also an uncorrected error card as he played in 10 games in 1991 but his career total is listed as 11. This is the 2nd Astro in a row in the set, as the last card was Astros Outfielder Mark Davidson.

I got some thicker paper for my printer, and I might try to print out some cards and see how they turn out. I will probably have to adjust the sizing on some cards, and figure out a way how to get them to print front and back, but I will hopefully figure everything out and have some cards to put in my binders to finish the '92 Topps set if all goes well. 1992 Topps Mark Davidson

Mark Davidson played in the Major Leagues from 1986-1991. He recieved Topps cards from 1988-1991, missing only the 1987 and 1992 sets. He was nothing more than a reserve outfielder, but he can say something that not many MLBers can say as he is a World Series champion, playing on the 1987 Minnesota Twins club. 

I started really trading baseball cards with friends in 1991 with friends at school in the 2nd grade, and Mark Davidson will always have a special place in my heart since his 1991 Fleer card was one of the first cards I remember getting in a trade. I don't know why, but for some reason I thought he was a superstar and wanted to get his card. Guess I was never much of a prospector, even back then.

This card was Mark's Sunset Card, and is the first of 2 Astros in a row in the set (Tony Eusebio is the second). It's a pretty standard card (not sure where I got the photo from), almost the kind of photo you would expect to see on a '92 Topps card.

1992 Topps Mike Scott

Mike Scott was a great pitcher during his career. He won 20 games, pitched a no-hitter, and almost led the Astros to the World Series in 1986. He recieved Topps cards for every year in his career, except for a sunset card. He only played in 2 games in 1991, but I think it still would've been fitting for Topps to put him in the 1992 set. Had he pitched a few more season and put up numbers like in his all-star seasons, we might be talking about him along with Jack Morris as players who should be in the Hall of Fame. This is the 2nd "star number" card in my set. #800 Dave Parker was the first. 

I finished the back to card #1103 today. I think I might just go ahead and finish all the backs to the manager cards next time I have a day off. They are difficult to do just because Baseball-Reference doesn't list the win totals for managers if the managed a partial season, they list the clubs' 162 game record. It's stupid and has thrown me off a tad as I have to research Wikipedia and other sources and then waste time on math to try to have a managers win-loss record for the back of the card. Might as well just try to get all of them out of the way so I don't have to deal with them anymore. I believe there are only 10 or so to go, and a few of them managed the entire 1991 season, so that will help. 

I'm taking a mini-vacation starting today, as I am headed up to Alabama with my wife to see her cousin get married on Saturday. We'll head home Sunday as I have to be back at work at 5AM Monday. The life of a baker never ends....Hopefully I won't see too many obnoxious 'Bama fans up there. It will be nice to get away from everything, and I'm looking forward to stopping in Talahassee to eat at Harry's. Short story before I go. I lived in Lakeland, Florida for most of my life. We had a bar and grille called Harry's in our town forever. I may have even won a gift card there at a Minor League game. I never went. Then in 2014, me, my wife, and 2 of our friends were in St. Augustine and there was a Harry's there. They do New Orleans-style food, and when we saw that they had red beans and rice, we decided to eat there. I got a catergory-5 hurricane to drink with my meal, and I don't remember eating half of it because I was pretty much buzzed, but the parts I do remember, the food was great. Half a year later, we are in Talahassee visiting my wife's brother, and he takes us to eat at a Harry's up there. I got the red beans and rice again, and it is amazing again. I looked at their website to see if there were any near us. Turns out that there are only 5, including the one in Lakeland, one in Ocala, and one in Gainesville. At the time, my wife had been going up to Gainesville for surgeries quite frequently, and one of those times, we checked the Harry's in Gainesville off our list. We haven't been to the Ocala one yet, but hopefully soon, and next time I'm in Lakeland to see my Dad, I hope to go to the Harry's that I've driven past a dozen times but never ate at. The one in Talahassee is nice, and I'm looking forward to a nice plate of red beans and rice and a nice tall diet coke (although after a 5 hour drive, a hurricane probably won't be sounding too bad).

1992 Topps Dean Wilkins

PLAYER BIO: Dean Wilkins, Astros

YEARS IN MAJORS: 1989-1991

LAST TOPPS SET HE APPEARED IN: None

APPEARANCES IN FUTURE TOPPS SETS: None

REASON LEFT OFF OF THE 1992 TOPPS SET: Probably because he only pitched in 7 games and had an ERA over 10.

NOTES: Dean never got a card in a Topps base set, even though he got cards in '90 Bowman, '90 Topps Debut, and the '90 Topps TV set. He had good numbers as far as Saves in the minors, so you would've figured he would've saw more time in the Bigs. This card was pretty difficult to make as the only photo I could find of Wilkins in an Astro uniform was in black and white. I used a program called Recolored (I believe) to match the colors where they should go and colorize the photo. Not the best, but it was the only thing I had to work with. One final note, I finished the back of card #993, which means I have finished 201 cards in the set. I hope to knock off #1000 tonight, leaving only 368 more backs to do. 1992 Topps Jim Corsi

Jim Corsi played 10 seasons in MLB, mostly for the Oakland Athletics. He came up with them in 1988, and was on their World Series winning club in 1989. After not appearing in the Bigs in '90, he was a Houston Astro for '91, back with the A's in '92, then selected by the Florida Marlins in the Expansion Draft in November of that year. He pitched with Florida in '93, missed '94, and was back with the A's for the 3rd time for 1995 and 1996. He pitched with the Boston Red Sox from '97-'99 and finished out his career with the Baltimore Orioles in '99. 

Jim appeared on a Topps card in '89 and '90, missed the next 2 years, appeared as a Marlin in '93, and didn't get another Topps card for the rest of his career. If I can find some decent photos, he might be a subject for a Missing Topps Cards project on my other blog. 

Jim pitched for Saint Leo University in St. Leo, Florida before he made the bigs. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in the 3rd grade. In '98 and '99, I went to a summer camp for teenagers with Type 1 diabetes. During the week we spent there, we went to various locations and participated in different sports. While there, we played basketball at St. Leo University, so it's kind of cool to find a Big Leaguer who played at a small Florida school that I shot hoops at once or twice. Maybe one day, I'll do a post about the whole week at camp if I can find some of the old photos I took.

1992 Topps Houston Astros Team Set

It seems like I haven't posted on this blog in months. With work and stuff at home, sometimes I just don't have time to make custom cards, let alone post any. Today, however, I had a day off, so I got the chance to make some new cards, and post the newest team set.

The 1991 Houston Astros had a bunch of rookies on their team, as they were rebuilding, and they had a ton of players who weren't in the original 1992 Topps set. They are all covered now, as well as the coaches, an Art Howe All-Star card, and a combo card featuring Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio (you would be surprised how hard it was to find a photo of them in the old Astros uniform).

As far as what I have been up to in making cards (since I usually post that at the end of a blog post), I have finished the Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, and St. Louis Cardinals team sets. I will try to work on the San Diego Padres (another team with many cards missing from the '92 set) and San Francisco Giants team sets tomorrow to finish out the National League. I may also work on a Lee Smith Record Breaker card (he set a NL record for Saves in '91). Thanks for checking out my latest post.
