1992 Topps #949 Bill Long

Bill Long pitched in the Majors from 1985 to 1991. He came up to the Big Leagues in 1985 with the Chicago White Sox. He spent 1986 in the minors. He spent 1987, 1988, and 1989 with the White Sox, and started 1990 with them, but was traded to the Chicago Cubs in April of that year. He finished the season with them and played the final season of his MLB career, 1991, with the Montreal Expos.

Bill got his first Topps card in the 1987 Topps Traded set. He got cards in the 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991 Topps sets in his career. He is missing cards from the 1985 Topps Traded, 1986 Topps, 1990 Topps Traded, and 1991 Topps Traded set.

This 1992 Topps card is Bill's sunset card, and I would love to find a good picture of Bill with an Expos uniform on to try to remake this card with. Until then, this will do.

I have been trying to go hard-core on checklists, and have finished the 1951-2001 Topps checklists. Just 18 more to go and I will be caught up. Once they are done, I will probably work on the 1995 Topps checklist to add all of the replacement players to it, and then get back to working on customs, specifically the 1993 Topps set.

Thanks for checking out my latest post.

1992 Topps #931 Kenny Williams

Kenny Williams played in the Majors from 1986-1991. He played for the Chicago White Sox from 1986-1988, spent the entire 1989 season with the Detroit Tigers, split 1990 with the Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays, and spent his final season in 1991 with the Blue Jays and Montreal Expos.  After his MLB career, he got involved in scouting, and eventually the front office, becoming the Chicago White Sox GM in 2000, and putting together the 2005 Chicago White Sox World Championship team.

Kenny first appeared on a Topps card in the 1988 set, got into the 1989 set and 1989 Traded sets, had a 1990 Topps card, and a 1991 Topps card. This 1992 Topps card covers his sunset card, and a 1987 Topps rookie card is now the only one he is missing.

I haven't posted much, and I probably will stick to this snail's pace of posting for a while, but keep checking back, I will eventually get through the whole 1992 Topps set, even if it takes me the rest of my life.

Thanks for checking out my latest card.

1992 Topps #919 Denny Martinez Season Highlights

Today's card is the 2nd Season Highlights subset card in my custom 1992 Topps set. Denny Martinez pitched a perfect game against the Dodgers in 1991, and only got a regular card and an All-Star card in the 1992 Topps set. Most other card companies, like Donruss, Fleer, Score, and I believe Upper Deck, all gave him a card commemorating the perfecto. This is actually an error card, as I left out an 'm' in the word 'game' in the 2nd sentence. It would've been cool pulling a card like this out of a pack in 1992. Too bad Topps didn't make any.

I have finished the 1997 Topps checklist, and have been working a little on making customs for a few projects. I am currently working on the 1998 set, doing some replacement player Pirates in the 1994 Topps Traded Update set (thanks to Gene Collier from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette for helping me get a complete roster!), and I am back at work trying to create a checklist for a fantasy 2020 Topps Archives: The Lost Cards set, which will feature missing Topps cards from different Topps sets in a set similar to the original Topps Archives ones.  Stay tuned for more on that on my other blog.

Life will be pretty crazy in the coming weeks, and I probably won't do a post before the new year, so have a Merry Christmas (or whatever holiday you do or don't celebrate) and a Happy New Year!  Thanks for checking out my latest post.

1992 Topps #867 Nikco Riesgo

Nikco Riesgo played 1 season in the Majors, getting called up to the Expos in 1991. He also was a replacement player in 1995 Spring Training, I believe with the Expos, but don't quote me on it. The records for replacement players are few and far between, but I have a list on my laptop of players I've found and who they played for, so once I get home, I'll check it and update this post.

Nikco only appeared on 2 major brand cards, a 1991 Bowman card and a 1992 Topps Debut card. He missed out on a regular 1992 Topps card, and I will also be making a 1994 Topps Traded Update card for his 1995 spring training time as a replacement.  This card posed me with a difficult question.  It turns out Nikco was sent to the Phillies in May 1991 (he was drafted by the Expos from the Phillies in December 1990). This happened after he appeared in his 4 games with the Expos. I chose not to put a 'now with Phillies' caption or update his acquisition by them since he only made it to the Majors with Montreal. It is just an interesting note that you would never know.

Thanks for checking out my latest post.

1992 Topps Ron Hassey

Ron Hassey missed out on getting his final Topps card when he was left off of the '92 set. The only other year he missed out on getting a Topps card was in 1979, which would've been his rookie year. Other than that, he appeard in every Topps set from 1980-1991. The only major brand that put Hassey in its 1992 set was Score. It seems a little funny that Ron was left off of most major '92 sets since he caught Denny Martinez's perfect game in 1991, making his the first catcher to catch 2 in their career.

Ron would become a coach for the Colorado Rockies in their first season in 1993, and begin a long coaching career after that. I might try to find a Rockies photo of him and try to make his '94 Topps card. Once I get some other expansion team sets done ('98 and '99 Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks), I think I might try to do the '94 Rockies set.

Thanks for checking out the latest card in my attempt to complete the 1992 Topps set.
