1992 Topps #998 Rich Monteleone

 Today's missing 1992 Topps card is #998 Rich Monteleone.

Rich made his Major League debut in 1987 with the Seattle Mariners. After spending the '87 season with them, he played for the California Angels from 1988 to 1989. He played for the New York Yankees from 1990 until 1993. He played with the San Francisco Giants in 1994, spent part of 1995 in Japan, and then spent the last 2 seasons of his MLB career back with the Angels in 1995 and 1996.  After retiring, he coached with the Yankees from 2002 to 2004. 

Rich only got on 4 Topps cards during his career, one in the 1990 set, one in the 1993 set, one in the 1994 Topps set, and one in the 1995 Topps set. He is missing cards from the 1987 Topps Traded set (which I will be making in the next few days when it comes up on my checklist), the 1988 Topps set, the 1988 Topps Traded set, the 1989 Topps set, the 1990 Topps Traded set, the 1991 Topps set, the 1994 Topps Traded set, then 1995 Topps Traded set, the 1996 Topps set, and the 1997 Topps set. With his coaching career, he is missing cards from the 2002 Topps Traded set, the 2003 Topps set, the 2004 Topps set, and the 2005 Topps set.

1992 Topps #997 Bobby Moore

 Today’s missing Topps card is #997 Bobby Moore. 

Bobby made his MLB debut in 1991 with the Kansas City Royals. He got into 18 games that season and that was the extent of his Major League career. 

He had a pretty decent line in those 18 games, going 5 for 14, hitting .357, scoring 3 runs, hitting 1 double, and stealing 3 bases. A whole lot better than I could do. After retiring, Bobby got into coaching, and is currently a coach for the Rome Braves this season. 

Bobby never got a Topps card in his career, in fact, the only card that wasn’t a minor league issue is his 1992 Topps MLB Debut card. Bobby is missing cards from the 1991 Topps Traded set as well as the ‘92 Topps set. I’ve covered both of those cards, so his career Topps run is complete unless he gets some coaching experience in the Majors.

1992 Topps #996 Kelvin Torve

 Today's missing Topps card is #996 Kelvin Torve.

Kelvin made his MLB debut in 1988 with the Minnesota Twins. He spent 1989 in the minors and played with the New York Mets in 1990 and 1991. 

Kelvin missed out on playing for the '87 World Champion Twins by a year. After the 1991 season, he played in Japan and was a teammate of Ichiro. He was mistakenly given the #24 by the Mets when it was 'unofficially' retired as it was Willie Mays' number. After playing a few games in the number, he was given #39. 

Kelvin never got into a regular Topps set. He is missing cards from the 1988 Topps Traded set, the 1989 Topps set, the 1990 Topps Traded set, and the 1991 Topps set. 

Besides the 1992 Topps custom, I have made his 1991 Topps custom.

Kelvin just needs cards from the 1988 Topps Traded set, the 1989 Topps set, and the 1990 Topps Traded set to complete his career Topps run.

1992 Topps #995 Rich Gedman

 Today’s missing Topps card is #995 Rich Gedman. 

Rich made his MLB debut for the Boston Red Sox in 1980, and played with them until June 7 of the 1990 season when he was traded to the Houston Astros. He finished the ‘90 season with the Astros and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as a free agent. He spent the 1991 and 1992 seasons with them. He played the next season in the minors and then retired, with his last year in the Majors being 1992. 

We are getting closer to card #1,000, and Rich holds the distinction of getting the last ‘star number’ card before #1,000. I wish Topps would still have star card numbers end in 5 or 0 and have superstars end in 50 or 00. They still do the superstars for the most part, but the rest of them are all over the place. Rich made 2 All-Star teams for the Sox, hit for the cycle, and caught Roger Clemens’ 20 K game. He was a solid catcher during his career, and due to him being a Massachusetts native, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him elected to the Red Sox Hall of Fame. 

Rich got his first Topps card in the 1982 set. He got into every Topps set from then through the 1990 set. He is missing cards from the 1980 Topps Traded set, the 1981 Topps set, the 1990 Topps Traded set, the 1991 Topps set, the 1991 Topps Traded set, and the 1993 Topps set. 

Besides the 1992 Topps custom, I have covered Rich’s 1991 Topps Traded card. 

Michael H. from the FB custom cards group has made German’s 1991 Topps

and 1993 Topps card. 

Rich is just missing cards from the 1980 Topps Traded set, the 1981 Topps set, and the 1990 Topps Traded set, and then his career Topps run will be complete.

1992 Topps #994 Johnny Guzman

 Today’s missing Topps card is #994 Johnny Guzman. 

Johnny played in the Majors for 2 seasons, 1991 and 1992, both with the Oakland Athletics. 

Johnny did not get into any regular issue Topps sets, and strangely, he got into the 1992 and 1993 Stadium Club sets. He really didn’t get into any other major issue sets either. Besides 1993 Pinnacle and Score cards, the only other cards he got were from the 1992 Donruss Rookies set, the 1992 Topps MLB Debut set, and the 1993 Topps Team Stadium Club sets. In fact, even though I think I have a ton of junk wax stuff, I do not have a single card of Johnny Guzman in my collection, Major or minor league issues. There’s a small chance I have the ‘92 Skybox AA card, but I don’t feel like digging through binders to verify. 

As stated earlier, Mr. Guzman didn’t get any Topps cards. He is missing cards from the 1991 Topps Traded and 1993 Topps sets. Besides his 1992 Topps custom, I have done his 1991 Topps Traded custom 

and his 1993 Topps card. 

That finishes out Johnny’s career Topps run.

1992 Topps #993 Goose Gozzo

 Today's missing Topps card is #993 Goose Gozzo.

Mauro "Goose" Gozzo made his MLB debut in 1989 for the Toronto Blue Jays. He played for the Cleveland Indians in 1990 and 1991. After a stop with the Minnesota Twins in 1992, he finished up his MLB career with the New York Mets in 1993 and 1994. 

This card is I guess technically an error, as I have him listed as "Goose" on the front and "Mauro" on the back.  

Goose got his first Topps card in the 1990 Topps set. That would be all she wrote as far as Topps cards for him. He is missing cards from the 1989 Topps Traded set, the 1990 Topps Traded set, the 1991 Topps set, the 1992 Topps Traded set, the 1993 Topps set, the 1993 Topps Traded set, the 1994 Topps set, and the 1995 Topps set. Besides the 1992 Topps custom, I have created Goose's 1991 Topps card,

his 1992 Topps Traded card, 

his 1993 Topps card,

his 1993 Topps Traded card,

his 1994 Topps card, 

and his 1995 Topps card.

Goose is just missing cards from the 1989 Topps Traded and 1990 Topps Traded sets and his career Topps run will be complete. I got pretty close to giving him the career run, but eventually I will get to the '89 and '90 sets and will complete many players runs.

1992 Topps #992 Brian Williams

 Today’s missing Topps card is #992 Brian Willams. 

Brian made his MLB debut in 1991 with the Houston Astros. He played with them in 1992, 1993, and 1994 before being swapped to the San Diego Padres. He spent the ‘95 season with the Pads, and signed as a free agent with the Detroit Tigers. He played for them in 1996, and the Baltimore Orioles signed him as a free agent for the 1997 season. He played in Japan in 1998, and came back to the States and played with the Astros again in 1999. His last year in the Majors was 2000, and he spent it with the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians. 

The Williams card was a little bit of a challenge for me. He didn’t get a Topps card in the 1992 set, but he was used as a checklist replacement in the 1992 ToppsGold set. Rather than making a ToppsGold checklist, Topps chose 6 players not in the ‘92 Topps set to get a ToppsGold card in place of the 6 checklists in the set. I took the Gold card and overlaid the gold nameplate with a regular one, and with a little bit of manipulation, it turned out fine. The back was the same except for the number needing to be changed. 

Brian also presented me with a tricky situation for the 1991 Topps set as he was a 1990 #1 draft pick, and needed a card in that subset of the ‘91 Topps set. He also made the Majors shortly after in 1991, so he needed to get a card in the ‘91 Traded set as well. I figured since the Draft Pick card came first and was different from the regular card, so I made both. 

Brian got his first regular issue Topps card in the 1993 Topps set. His only other Topps card was in the 1994 set. He needs cards from the 1991 Topps set, the 1991 Topps Traded set, the 1995 Topps set, the 1995 Topps Traded set, 2 cards from the 1996 Topps set (Tigers and Orioles), the 1997 Topps set, the 1998 Topps set, the 1999 Topps Traded set, the 2000 Topps set, 2 cards from the 2000 Topps Traded set (Cubs and Indians), and the 2001 Topps set. 

Besides the 1992 Topps custom, I have made Brian’s 1991 Topps,

1991 Topps Traded, 

1995 Topps,

and 1998 Topps cards. 

I believe I might also have a 1996 Topps card of Brian on my laptop somewhere. 

Brian is missing cards from the 1995 Topps Traded, 2 cards from the 1996 Topps set, the 1997 Topps set, the 1999 Topps Traded set, the 2000 Topps set, 2 cards from the 2000 Topps Traded set, and the 2001 Topps set, and when those are made it will complete his career Topps run.

1991 Topps #991 Kevin Brown

 Todays missing Topps card is #991 Kevin Brown. 

Kevin made his MLB debut in 1990 with the New York Mets. In September 1990, he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in the Charlie O’Brien deal. Kevin finished the 1990 season with the Brewers and played with them in 1991. He got selected off waivers in April 1992 by the Seattle Mariners and played with them in 1992, his final MLB season. 

Kevin never appeared on any Topps cards during his career. He got into the 1990 and 1991 Bowman sets, the 1990 Topps TV Mets issue, the 1992 Topps Stadium Club set, and the 1991 Topps MLB debut set. A good number of Topps issued sets to not get one in the flagship set. According to his Wikipedia page, he is a high school varsity baseball coach. When I searched ‘Kevin D Brown baseball’ a page came up that had his picture from the wiki page and the title Reverend Kevin D Brown. When I searched that, it led me to a FB page of a church called Journey Ministries in Sacramento, CA. The pictures look similar, and a post mentioned a birthday celebration for Pastor Kevin Brown on March 5, which indeed is the same as the aforementioned pitcher. 

So I guess after baseball he became a pastor at some point as well. 

Kevin is missing 2 cards from the 1990 Topps Traded set (Mets and Brewers), one from the 1991 Topps set, one from the 1992 Topps Traded set, and one from the 1993 Topps set.

1992 Topps #990 Jose Gonzalez

 Todays missing Topps card is #990 Jose Gonzalez. 

Jose got his first Big League action in 1985 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He played with them through 42 games in the 1991 season. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 3rd, and played 15 games with them before being claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Indians. He finished the 1991 season with them and then signed with the California Angels as a free agent. He played the 1992 season with the Angels, his last season in the Bigs. 

I was a fan of the 1988 LA Dodgers team as early as 1992 or so. I got Orel Hershiser’s book ‘Out of the Blue’, and got familiar with many of the names on the team. Jose Gonzalez was one of them, and I was surprised that I couldn’t find any cards of him. I finally got his 1990 Donruss card out of a pack around 1994, and probably got his 1991 Topps card a year or so later. I still don’t have too many Gonzalez cards, but I guess I can understand since he was more of a reserve outfielder. 

Jose only got 2 Topps cards, those coming in the 1990 and 1991 Topps sets. He is missing cards from the 1985 Topps Traded, 1986 Topps, 1987 Topps, 1988 Topps, 1989 Topps, 1991 Topps Traded (2 cards, 1 as a Pirate and 1 as an Indian), 1992 Topps Traded, and 1993 Topps sets. 

Besides the 1992 Topps custom, I have made Jose’s 1989 Topps card,

both 1991 Topps Traded cards,

and his 1992 Topps Traded card. 

Reader Paul B. also helped and made his 1993 Topps sunset card. 

Now Jose is just missing cards from the 1985 Topps Traded, 1986 Topps, 1987 Topps, and 1988 Topps sets and his career Topps run will be complete.

1992 Topps #989 Rosario Rodriguez

Today's missing Topps card is #989 Rosario Rodriguez

Rosario made it to the Majors in 1989 with the Cincinnati Reds. He played with them in 1990, winning the World Series that year, and then got traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates at the end of the season. He played with them in 1991, his final season in the Bigs. 

Rosario only pitched in 9 games in 1990, but still got a 1991 Topps card. I guess because he was part of the World Champions and he was a rookie they decided to give him a card. He also appeared in the 1990 Topps MLB Debut set, even though he didn't get a 1990 Topps Traded card. 

Rosario got his first and only Topps card in the 1991 Topps set. He is missing cards from the 1990 Topps Traded and 1991 Topps Traded sets to complete his career Topps run. Besides the 1992 Topps custom, I've done his 1991 Topps Traded custom, leaving only the 1990 Topps Traded card keeping his career Topps run from being finished.
